Abelardo is a DPhil student in Economics at the University of Oxford and a member of St. Hugh's College. He graduated from the MPhil in Economics, Oxford, in 2021, and has a Bachelor's in Economics and Finance from ITESM CEM in Mexico.
Abelardo's research interests include political economy and development economics. His work focuses on populism and authoritarianism with recent projects studying the impact of propaganda eroding democracy, and the economic and political legacies of colonialism [paper]. Recent work in progress focuses on incentives for political participation in the face of authoritarian regimes, perceptions of violence, and the economic consequences of peace. Contextually, his work has mostly focused on Latin America, namely Venezuela and Mexico.
Abelardo is also a part-time research associate for the What Works Hub for Global Education, at the Blavatnik School of Government, and a tutor for the Economics of Developing Countries course at University College and St. Anne's College.
