Biography

Risk is an inescapable fact of life in every country, but it is more prevalent – and a graver threat – in poor rural regions than in developed economies. In the first chapter of my thesis, I analyze data from rural Pakistan to identify the impact of different risks on households in this region and explore the different informal mechanisms used by households to cope with these risks. In future chapters, I plan to analyze risk aversion and the take-up of micro insurance using data from experimental games conducted in rural Ethiopia.
