Biography
Jacobus Cilliers is currently a DPhil candidate in Economics at the University of Oxford, where he passed the MPhil in Economics (with distinction) in 2010. He is teaching an applied game theory course for graduate students in Ethiopia.
His doctoral research is on the political economy of conflict, with a geographic focus on central and western Africa. In an empirical paper he looks at the effects of exposure to violence on network formation, trust and public goods provision in local communities in Sierra Leone. In a theoretical paper, he looks at the coercive relationship between armed groups and civilians in a state of anarchy, with specific focus on the civil war in Sierra Leone; and the ongoing conflict in the Kivu provinces, DRC.
